About this event
The National Gyeongju Museum is holding a special exhibition, 'Reliquaries of the Wooden Pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple,' to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the excavation of the Hwangnyongsa Temple site. At the site where the wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa once stood, the cornerstone that enshrined the reliquaries still remains to this day. This exhibition brings together and presents about 350 pieces of reliquaries discovered in the relic cavity of the cornerstone and confirmed through excavation surveys beneath the cornerstone in 1976. In particular, the gilt-bronze sarira reliquary and the cover of the relic cavity excavated from inside the relic cavity are unveiled after long preservation treatment and restoration, and new contents of the sarira ornamentation revealed through scientific investigation and research are also introduced. We hope this will be a place to newly encounter the world of sarira ornamentation enshrined in the wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa, the symbol of Silla Buddhism.
