[Performance Introduction] Choi Jin-seok Shadow-Play for String Orchestra (2023/2026) One day, I watched my shadow cast on the ground intently. Sometimes it followed me in a very accurate shape, and sometimes in a deformed and distorted shape. This piece was written out of a desire to express such shadow shapes through music. To musically depict the shadow shape, the composition technique I used in this work is imitation. That is, the musical motive in each phrase precedes in one instrument, which represents 'myself'. Then, in the rest of the instruments, that motive is imitated as is, or imitated with changes in parameters such as pitch, direction, timbre, and dynamics. Lee Han-shin Journey of No Return for String Ensemble <Journey of No Return> for String Ensemble is a song of longing for my father who passed away in February 2023, and a final farewell to my university teacher who suddenly passed away in March this year. The work began with a surreal afterimage of a white butterfly flying into the desolate sky through the cold winter snow on the day of my father's funeral procession. That memory of heartbreaking liberation overlaps with the heart of mourning for my teacher three years later, expanding into a grand narrative of circulation beyond loss. Through the delicate textures created by string instruments, it contains the composer's deep comfort, wishing that the souls who disappeared into the cold snow will reach eternal peace in the world beyond. Lee Bok-nam The Lion Dance: Bukcheong (rev. 2026) “The Lion Dance: Bukcheong” was inspired by the Bukcheong Saja Noreum (Bukcheong Lion Dance), which was played with lion masks on the first full moon of the year in Bukcheong-gun, South Hamgyeong Province. The music of Bukcheong Saja Noreum, currently designated as National Intangible Cultural Property No. 15, is characterized by the repeated heterophonic detuned melodies of the tungso in a somewhat unfamiliar scale, the blunt drum rhythm, and the exciting dynamism of the lion dance. This piece begins with an introductory part that plaintively depicts the night image of Bukcheong, and as a whole, the melodies from the Bukcheong Saja Noreum are colorfully woven together by percussion and string orchestra to form an exciting play-like atmosphere. “The Lion Dance: Bukcheong” was rearranged by commission from Unji-hoe to adapt “Bukcheong Lion Dance” for a string orchestra and two percussionists. Lee In-sik Jo-ryeong (Bird Pass) for String Orchestra (2026) As I prepare to cross the Bird Pass (Joryeong), the scholar's heart becomes grand with longing hope. What kind of road will face me after crossing this hill? In anticipation of this day, I have been busy and struggling for a long time, and I look back on my time once again. The wind seeping into the mountain foot gently taps my shoulder as if to wash away the previous hardships. Let's cross! Let's face the me beyond! Joryeong faces me silently. My appearance is shabby before its grand posture. No, was I always this small? I become quite humble. The me inside me climbs and descends the bumpy hills. Climbing and descending, catching my breath. Why is this hill just like my heart~ Occasionally, the sound flowing from the village seems to comfort me. Arirang Arirang~~ It is the song of our lives. Lee Jong-koo Maji-gut for String Ensemble (2026) Today, I want to bring up a story from about 50 years ago when I was studying in Germany. At that time, my teacher was Professor Eugen Felte. One day, I wrote a work called 「3 Tones, 3 Weaks, 3 Longs」 and showed him the scale that became the musical background of that work. He said, “It's a pity you didn't become Messiaen's student and became mine instead,” and named this scale ‘Yi’s dodecaphony’. This scale was created by stacking minor thirds based on the Korean three-tone scale. The professor evaluated it as a logical scale that can cross between tonality and atonality. And he personally took my work and that thesis to the Karlsruhe Conservatory library to be stored, and I often wonder if the traces still remain there today. Today, 50 years later, I take out that scale again, write new music, and include it in my 「Maji-gut」 series. The feeling of walking back into old memories feels like swimming in a faded old album.
