About this event

[Performance Introduction] An unprecedented attempt by a traditional Korean orchestra (Gugak) conductor to lead a Western symphony orchestra. A monumental project where a Western symphony orchestra active in Daejeon and the best Gugak conductor in Korea today present commissioned and premiered works containing Korean sentiments. [Program] 1. Namdo Arirang for Orchestra Asia (Composer: Baek Dae-ung / Orchestra Arrangement: Kye Seong-won) : Baek Dae-ung (1943–2011), the composer of the Gugak orchestral piece 'Namdo Arirang,' learned the melodic essence of traditional music through transcribing various genres of traditional music and aimed to create works with universality based on this. 'Namdo Arirang' incorporates melodies from Jindo Arirang of Jeolla-do and Miryang Arirang of Gyeongsang-do, with solos and variations for each instrument unfolding brilliantly within a 6-beat rhythm. The original was composed for Orchestra Asia and is currently played as a major Gugak orchestral work. Around 2000, the Shanghai Orchestra performed it with Western instruments. 2. Janggu Concerto <Daedong: Jeong Yeo-rip> (Composer: Kim Dae-seong / Janggu Soloist: Kim So-ra) : The Janggu concerto 《Daedong》 was commissioned by Janggu performer Kim So-ra. This work aims to musically embody the ideal of Daedong (Great Harmony) dreamed of by the mid-Joseon thinker Jeong Yeo-rip—a spirit of community where everyone lives together regardless of status or class. Before composing, I visited the birthplaces of Jeong Yeo-rip in Jinan and Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, where his traces remain, to deepen my understanding of his life and thoughts. The air of the space and the historical resonance I felt while walking in his footsteps became the foundation for the sentiment and musical imagination of the work. 3. Concerto for 9-string Geomungo and Gugak Orchestra (Geomungo Soloist: Heo Yoon-jeong) : Composer Donald Womack, who actively exchanges with the domestic Gugak scene alongside Thomas Osborne, was inspired by the old name of the Geomungo, 'Hyeongeum (Black Zither),' to embody this unique instrument as a powerful mythical being. In Korean tradition, the black dragon is considered a symbol of powerful spiritual energy and good luck. The work consists of three movements, each depicting a different aspect of this mythical journey. Movement 1 'The Dragon Awakes' begins with rough, exploratory gestures, evoking the struggle of a mythical being not yet fully formed. Movement 2 'Dragon’s Tears' shifts to a contemplative and sorrowful mood. The restrained sound and mournful melody recall the dragon as a solitary being. Movement 3 'The Dragon Soars' fully releases the dragon's vitality. The powerful, soaring melody depicts the dragon rising into the sky on a majestic wind. 4. Concerto for Daegeum, So-ajaeng, and Geomungo <Tomorrow (Naeil)> (Composer: Kim Seong-guk, Orchestra Arrangement: Bae Ju-hee) Soloists: Ryu Geun-hwa (Daegeum), Lee Hwa-yeon (So-ajaeng), Do Gyeong-tae (Geomungo) : Namdo Sinawi derived from the shamanic music of the South Jeolla region. Shamanic rituals (Gut) involve days and nights of continuous singing, dancing, and music, and Namdo Sinawi instrumentalizes the improvised musical expressions of the performers honed through these rituals. Thus, the representative characteristic of Sinawi is improvisation. Within a fixed rhythmic framework (jangdan) and promised paths, performers head toward their own worlds. The more skilled the performer, the more they enable a new musical experience by crossing the rhythmic framework and expanding the melody.
