[Event Introduction] The son fell to love, and the father could not step down from the throne. A portrait of cruel power unfolding in the heart of the Spanish Empire The Korea National Opera presents Verdi's opera <Don Carlos> as the final work of its 2026 subscription season. Consisting of a total of 5 acts, this work is considered the pinnacle of 19th-century grand opera. Set during the peak of the Spanish Empire, it depicts a court tragedy of love and power, freedom and oppression. The conflict between son and father over a woman expands beyond individual love to issues of state and ideology, transforming the court into a stage of immense conflict. This production is based on the French version originally conceived by Verdi, and conducted by Valerio Galli, who previously worked on <Attila> in 2022, unleashing the dramatic energy of Verdi's music. The stage is directed by master Yannis Kokkos, who has presented grand repertoires on major stages worldwide including <Tristan und Isolde>, <Nabucco>, and <Turandot>, portraying the power structure of the Spanish court and the tragic fates of the characters with dense staging. [Synopsis] 'I had everything, but I did not have her love.' Spanish Prince Don Carlos and French Princess Elisabeth were destined to be united through a political marriage for peace between the two countries, and fell deeply for each other at their first meeting. However, as the treaty is altered, she becomes the queen of Carlos's father, King Philip II of Spain. The King welcomes her for the sake of the country, but already knowing that her heart is not with him, he bears the crown in silence. Carlos's friend Rodrigue fights for the freedom of Flanders under Spanish rule and awakens Carlos to the cause, leading him to ultimately stand against his father's power. However, that resistance is deemed treason, and the King makes the cruel choice he must bear as a father to arrest his son. Ordered into exile, Carlos shares a final farewell with Elisabeth, and witnessing this, the King submits his son to the Inquisition. At the moment the death sentence is handed down, the voice of the late king resounds, and Carlos is dramatically saved. The King is left with nothing but power and solitude, having failed to protect love or family.
