About this event

[Introduction] This performance, <New Scent of Old Joseon>, is a project to bring back to the stage traditional dances that were created by Han Seong-jun, a core figure of Joseon dance during the Japanese colonial period, but are not transmitted today. The Seoul Gyeonggi Dance Research Association felt a sense of problem with the transmission bias and single-line lineage-centered system of the Korean traditional dance world, and recognized the importance of discovering and re-illuminating forgotten dances, disappearing dances, and dances of which only names are transmitted. Accordingly, this organization planned the <Seoul Dance Research Series> and comprehensively analyzed newspaper articles, literature records, record data, photographs, and oral advice to restore the intangible dance heritage to the stage. <New Scent of Old Joseon> is an extension of this work, selecting works with excellent artistry and public response among the research restoration works presented so far to construct a single performance. It consists mainly of dances whose records remain but whose contents have not been realized on stage, such as ▲Dangamu ▲Gunnosaeryeongmu ▲Hwajangachum ▲Choripdong ▲Baramu ▲Seoul Mudangchum. This performance is attracting attention in that it is not a simple reproduction of the past, but 'staging based on reasonable imagination' interpreted with imagination and created artistically based on records.
