[Performance Introduction] 〈Noraebang Diplomacy〉 is a performance created by artist and performer Shaifulbahri Mohamad, based on his own experiences with Korean popular culture and his reflections on the relationship between Korean society and Southeast Asian societies. In today's world where cultures and people move more freely between each other than ever before, this work begins with one simple question: as much as we love each other's cultures, are we also ready to accept each other for who we are? Set in a 'noraebang' (karaoke room), a space where everyone temporarily becomes equal, the performance peers into the complex relationships between distance, hospitality and exclusion, affection and imbalance that can exist behind cultural attraction. Through songs, stories, and humor, the audience goes beyond being mere spectators to become part of the performance, and is soon invited to a time to think together about how we look at and accept each other. Meeting the Festival While reading Shaiful's working notes, there was a word that caught my attention for a particularly long time. 'We/Our' ('uri'). 'Our' is one of the powerful ways the Korean language constructs intimacy. Family, friends, and even people meeting for the first time easily become 'our'. Yet that intimacy simultaneously produces boundaries. Someone is easily let inside, while another, even after staying a long time, is ultimately left outside. Even those who sang together become strangers again in front of the immigration desk. You can sing along to a song, but you cannot sing along to 'our'. Shaiful brings this rupture inside the noraebang.
