After the Korean War, many Korean artists moved to France, regarding Paris as the 'capital of modern art.' In the post-WWII Parisian art world, which was competing with New York for the center of international art to revive the glory of modernism, these artists interacted with global peers, experienced diverse and new modern art, and built their own creative worlds. This exhibition provides a multi-dimensional look at the artistic worlds of Korean artists who traveled to France from the 1950s to the 1970s, starting with Lee Jong-woo, the first Korean artist to go to Paris in 1925. By exploring the diverse artistic worlds of these artists who pursued modernization while seeking their national identity in an unfamiliar place, and expanded the boundaries of art through new thematic explorations and media experimentation, the exhibition reflects on the meaning and value of their lives and art as strangers.
