About this event

[Performance Introduction] Bach, the architect of music, and Beethoven, the pioneer of form Pianist Hyeonah Choi's Dialogue <Bach & Beethoven> Vol.1 Source & Structure Bach and Beethoven are the roots and foundation of Western music history. While Bach established musical structure, Beethoven dramatically infused human emotion built upon that framework. Pianist Hyeonah Choi's newly presented <Dialogue Series> opens its first story with the 'Source & Structure' chosen by Bach and Beethoven. Spanning five performances, the story of Bach and Beethoven weaves together Bach's original works, arrangements, and Beethoven's compositions to journey toward the origins of music. The audience will witness how musical language originating from a single motif evolves into new forms across eras and figures, experiencing how structure and form serve not as constraints, but as the foundation for free imagination. This performance opens with Prelude and Fugue BWV 846 from Bach's <The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I>. Completed with the most fundamental materials without complex ornamentation, this piece serves as the core of the theme 'Source' in this series. It is followed by Bach's <Italian Concerto> BWV 971. Although titled 'Concerto', this work is performed on a single harpsichord without an orchestra. Bach utilized timbre contrast to embody the alternating dialogue characteristic of a concerto. The final piece of Part 1, Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 1, is his first published piano sonata. While inheriting the classical idiom of his teacher Haydn, it attempts to incorporate a four-movement structure and expanded scale within the sonata form. Part 2 opens with Beethoven's <32 Variations> WoO.80. These variations consist of a short eight-bar theme and thirty-two variations. Driven by a descending chromatic progression throughout, the work reflects Beethoven's intention to inherit Baroque idioms. August Stradal arranged Bach's <Organ Sonata No. 4> for piano, while Busoni arranged the Chaconne BWV 1004 from Bach's <Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin>. Reimagining works written for organ and violin on the piano, these two pieces establish the structure intended by pianist Hyeonah Choi: 'Bach Original Work - Arrangement - Beethoven'. After completing her bachelor's and master's degrees at Korea National University of Arts, pianist Hyeonah Choi moved to Germany to complete the Konzertexamen at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and earned a master's degree in Lied interpretation from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. Currently, while nurturing future musicians at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Pusan National University, Yewon School, and Seoul Arts High School, she active onstage as representative of Ensemble Verno and member of Piano Duo Sono and Curious.
