About this event

Whether a person or an object, the first thing one encounters when facing any subject is its 'name'. A name is the shortest and most powerful language to perceive that subject. Therefore, we spend no small amount of time and energy in naming things. What meaning do titles hold in films where billions of budget and numerous personnel are invested? A film title is the result of condensing the multi-voiced aspects of the world embraced by the film into a single line or word. Before the screen even opens, the title causes the audience to imagine the essence of the film and play their own trailer in their heads. Moreover, the title itself is a sign reflecting a specific era and revealing public sensibilities. There were eras when archaic written styles mixed with Chinese characters dominated the screen, eras when unidentifiable foreign words were touted as symbols of 'sophistication', and eras when languid colloquial titles reflecting the demands of daily life flourished. In other words, the evolution of title-making has reflected Korean social cultural trends and the fickle sensibilities of the public. <Title Exhibition – Text, Typography, Moving Image> rearranges and analyzes the titles of about 8,400 Korean films released from 1919 to 2025 using various keywords, presenting a new reference for viewing Korean cinema. It reads the emotional and narrative flows of each era through the most frequently appearing words, and illuminates the filmography of actors representing Korean film history from the perspective of titles. In addition, it attempts to view Korean film history from a new perspective by bringing filters of various layers such as gender, color, and sentence structure. It also pays attention to the plastic aesthetics possessed by titles. The movement of titles in opening sequences and various title typefaces and designs encountered in posters and flyers are devices that visually embody the emotion of the film while simultaneously proving the beauty of Hangeul itself. The vibrant lettering and calligraphy filling the museum walls, and animation and video works reinterpreted from the respective perspectives of contemporary directors and graphic designers breathe new life into familiar film titles. <Title Exhibition – Text, Typography, Moving Image> goes beyond making film titles that existed as static texts move again and be read anew, expanding them into objects of 'experience'. Names no longer remain just things to be called. Here, titles live and move once again.
