[Performance Introduction] <Extremes and Everything In Between> Residence Program II This program traverses the farthest opposites of music, exploring the human emotions and layers of time that fill the space in between. Through a musical journey that moves back and forth across the gaps between extremes, it asks how tradition and modern, simplicity and complexity, darkness and light can connect as a single flow. From the primal voice of folklore to the intense tension of the Baroque, the condensed grief and modern reflection of the Renaissance, and the bright vitality of Classicism, different eras and aesthetics reflect and resonate with each other on a continuous line rather than being disconnected. Telemann's Concerto for solo viola and string orchestra in G Major TWV 51:G9 is one of the most important surviving Baroque viola concertos, elegantly and vividly revealing the warm tone and virtuosity of the viola. Across four movements, it presents lyricism, vigor, and the unique balance of the Baroque. Bach's Concerto for solo violin, strings, and continuo in D minor BWV 1052R is known as a restoration of a lost original violin concerto. It shows the essence of the Baroque concerto through intense energy, elaborate counterpoint, and dramatic contrast. Dowland's 'If My Complaints Could Passions Move' follows. Representing the Renaissance era, this song captures the feelings of unrequited love and deep loss within a restrained melody, delivering a timeless, deep resonance. Britten's 'Lachrymae' (Reflections on a Song of Dowland) for solo Viola and Strings, Op. 48a connects the past and the present based on Dowland's melody. Through modern harmony and delicate variations, it sheds new light on the original song's emotion, maximizing the deep and rich expressiveness of the viola. Lastly, Schubert's Rondo for solo violin and strings in A Major, D.438 provides a bright ending to the program, contrasting with the dark and internal emotions of the preceding works. Based on deep respect for Mozart and the folk sentiment of Vienna, this work encompasses classical balance and romantic lyricism, singing of hope and joy in life. These works, born in different eras and languages, ultimately show that tradition and innovation, sadness and joy, and past and present can coexist in a single flow. [PROGRAM] G. P.
