500m 이상의 게르마늄 토양에서 자란 함양산삼은 치밀하고 단단한 조직, 높은 사포닌 함량 등 매우 뛰어난 품질로 명품산삼으로 불리고 있으며, 전국 최초 산삼이력제를 실시하여 소비자가 생산정보를 정확히 알 수 있고, 산양삼지킴이 활동으로 지속적인 품질 관리를 하여 명품산삼으로써 차별화된 특성을 유지하고 있다. 천년의 신비가 살아 숨 쉬는 천연기념물 제154호 함양 상림공원에서 잊혀져가는 산삼과 심마니의 역사문화 등을 계승할 수 있는 콘텐츠를 활용한 축제 프로그램 운영으로 산삼의 의미와 역사적 가치를 재조명 하고, 군의 대표 브랜드인 청정임산물 산삼의 이미지를 활용하여 지역농특산물의 판로를 확대, 산림·문화·관광 자원과의 연계 프로그램 운영으로 지역경제를 활성화하고자 마련되었으며, 매년 9~10월경 개최되고 있다.
