About this event

[PERFORMANCE INTRODUCTION] Geometry of Music II : Notation Pianist Lee Ye-kyung will hold a piano recital on August 12 at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei under the theme 'Geometry of Music II : Notation'. Through the 'Geometry of Music' performance, she presents a perspective of looking at the precise structure and design of music from various angles. It is a project starting from the perspective that just as geometry is connected by the relationship of points, lines, and planes, music also organically constructs a world with notes, rhythms, and harmonies. While the first series in 2024 explored 'transformation' under the theme of how the form of a piece was transformed, this performance chose 'notation' as its theme. Through the 'notation' engraved on composers' scores, we find out how the inspiration, emotion, reality, and contemplation that composers came up with were expressed in notes. This performance becomes a journey where pianist Lee Ye-kyung directly decodes those traces of inscription and realizes them into sound. Pianist Lee Ye-kyung presents a program in which composers inscribed the real world onto the score through notation and built those traces into geometric structures. Ligeti inscribed 'the process of sound forming into structure' as symbols through open string motifs and repeating patterns, Chopin recorded the shaking of waves with rhythm and melody, and Bach/Busoni's Chaconne persistently expanded the same motif to complete an architectural form. Mussorgsky translated actual scenes into notes to realize musical painting. Pianist Lee Ye-kyung suggests a new way of approaching music through the process of realizing the records notated in geometric order by each composer into sound. In addition, she intends to discover the infinite possibilities of music by continuously exploring the various processes of realizing notes within a structure into sound. The emotions felt through the live performance of pianist Lee Ye-kyung within meticulously designed music become true records that we must look back on today. [Program] G.
