[Show Introduction] Creative Group Between Acts (Makgwa Maksai) Meeting at the Doosan Art Education Playwriting Workshop in winter 2025, we formed a playwriting group named 'Sai' (Between). On the day the play we read and wrote together was read on stage, we wished to sustain that moment when each other's emotions touched. How can we continue survival on an Earth littered with pain? We chose 'doing-plays' as our method of survival. Each play, composed of delightful yet bitter lives gathered together, meets other lives as it is uttered in the place called theater. Thus continuing the optimism of jokes, we train our stamina for survival. One-Act Play Series <Jokes and Curses> Resisting grand narratives that alienate individuals, this performance explores the sight of us who have no choice but to stay grounded on Earth through the language of jokes and curses. It defines curses as 'love toward the past' bound to yesterday's wounds, and jokes as 'love toward the future' that lightens the weight of tragedy to make tomorrow possible. Gathering 9 plays containing each member's gaze, it completes a collective chronicle standing firm on the soil called Earth. The play moves from the attraction of curses through the buoyancy of jokes toward Earth's gravity. 'Attraction of curses' is an utterance space captured by the system, while 'Buoyancy of jokes' is a space where deviation and play from designated narratives occur. 'Earth's gravity' is a force resolving the possibility of returning to reality after ending wandering. While living bound to the past (curses), we sustain today by floating fleeting futures (jokes) like balloons. Borrowing the buoyancy of jokes to endure life's weight, standing before a microphone to call each other's names becomes the momentum to stay firmly rooted on this dreadful Earth. And that soil becomes our final destination to reach.
