About this event

The shapes appearing on the screen do not possess the complete form of a rabbit. The body structure is unclear, images and symbols that seem unrelated to each other are mixed, and sometimes they look closer to objects or traces than living organisms. Nevertheless, the moment long ears are added, the audience generally reads it as a rabbit. Adding long ears does not make every shape a rabbit. However, in front of the actual image, that clue works faster and stronger than expected. The audience thinks of the name rabbit before fully examining the identity of the shape, and only then questions the judgment they made. In other words, perception arrives before logical explanation. The long ears are closer to a minimal mark that makes the image be read in a specific direction, rather than proving the essence of the rabbit. When long ears are added, different shapes come into a single category, and conversely, when those ears disappear, the possibility of looking like something completely different increases. Little information creates strong perception, but that perception does not explain everything about the shape. In the working process, I leave enough clues to be read as a rabbit, but ensure that the entire screen is not completely subordinated to that name. While looking like a rabbit, the shape also harbors other possibilities such as an object, a person, a machine, a symbol, or an afterimage of memory. Although a single name makes the shape quickly understood, other elements in the screen continue to mismatch with that name. We classify unfamiliar images based on a few familiar characteristics, and read traces of expressions, intentions, emotions, and memories within them. Even before we fully know what the shape actually is, we begin to imagine an existence just through the sense of resemblance. However, reading a certain shape as a familiar existence is different from accepting it as entirely the same existence. Even in front of a shape with a face, body, response, and memory resembling a human, it is not easily decided how far that resemblance is valid. Familiar marks pull unfamiliar existences close, but unexplained differences create boundaries again. The shapes on the screen hover between rabbits and non-rabbits, organisms and objects, familiar existences and those not yet classified. Although names are quickly given depending on what they resemble, whether that name alone can explain both the identity and status of the shape is left open. Long ears are not the correct answer but a direction. While calling forth the name rabbit, it leaves behind the rest that cannot be explained by that name. Rather than a shape to represent a single object, the rabbit is closer to a device that reveals the way images are created and read. The screen stays between the moment of being read as a rabbit and the moment of scattering back into unfamiliar shapes.
