About this event

Civilization blossomed on Jeju, a volcanic island on the Eurasian Plate, flowing in not only from the sea but also arriving from northern landmasses. Diverse elements scattered, gathered in Jeju, and blended into transformations, shaping the ecology, geography, and lifestyle of present-day Jeju. Marking its 10th anniversary, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on Jeju's dynamic historical trajectory of meeting northern civilizations, scattering (heokkeuda), gathering (modakchida), and transforming (iyahong). The Biennale takes 'Iyahong,' the refrain from the Iyahong Taryeong folk song that drifted from the mainland and became a native Jeju folk song, as its key title and core concept. Through Jeju, where principles of climate and sustenance are embedded, the Jeju Biennale aims to present aesthetics and modes of survival crafted together by objects, nature, human life, and divinity. - Main Program: Exhibition Program 1. From Chusa's Perspective (Jeju Museum of Art) - An exhibition reinterpreting the aesthetics of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui through Jeju's visual form and extending his exile under political realities and historical violence into a contemporary viewpoint 2. Black Stones Roll and Roll (Five Hundred Generals Gallery, Jeju Stone Park) - An exhibition exploring the intersection of nature, humanity, and northern civilization through Jeju's basalt and stone culture to experience multidimensional temporality 3. Big Grandmother's Navel (Jeju Art Platform / Art Space Ia / Gallery Remicon) - An exhibition viewing Jeju's spirit of inclusiveness and multilayered life force through its polytheistic (pantheon) culture in the language of art
