* The festival details below are for the 2026 festival, and the 2027 festival details are currently being updated * The Ice Country Hwacheon Sancheoneo Festival held in Hwacheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is a unique winter festival selected in 2011 by CNN of the US as one of the '7 Wonders of Winter'. The festival is held every January when the Hwacheoncheon Stream, famous for its clear water, freezes solid, and visitors can experience catching Sancheoneo, known as the queen of the valley, through ice fishing and bare-handed catching. Along with the hand-tasting thrill of Sancheoneo ice fishing, you can deliciously eat it raw or grilled right away, and various winter games such as ice sleds, snow sleds, and bobsleighs unfold alongside fishing, attracting over 1 million visitors every year.
