About this event

Whether encountering a person or an object, the very first thing we face is the 'name'. A name is the shortest yet most powerful language for recognizing a subject. Because of this, we spend considerable time and energy in naming things. What meaning does a title hold in a film that involves billions in budget and countless personnel? A film's title is the condensed result of the polyphonic aspects of the world contained within the film, compressed into a single line or word. Even before the screen opens, the title allows the audience to imagine the essence of the film and play their own preview inside their minds. Furthermore, the title itself is a symptom reflecting a specific era and a symbol revealing public sensibilities. There was an era when an elegant literary style mixed with Hanja dominated the screen, while another era called forth unidentified foreign words as a badge of 'sophistication', and at another time, listless colloquial titles reflecting the demands of daily life flourished. In short, the evolution of title-making has reflected the cultural trends of Korean society and the fickle sensibilities of the public. This exhibition rearranges and analyzes the titles of over 8,400 Korean films released from 1919 to 2025 using various keywords, offering a new reference point for viewing Korean cinema. Through the most frequently appearing words, we read the emotions and narrative flows of each era, and illuminate the filmography of actors representing Korean film history from the perspective of titles. We also aim to look at Korean film history through multiple layers of filters such as gender, color, and sentence structure. We also focus on the plastic aesthetics of titles. The movement of titles in opening sequences, and the various title typefaces and designs encountered on posters and flyers, serve as devices to visually realize the film's emotions while demonstrating the beauty of Hangeul itself. Lively lettering and calligraphy filling the exhibition walls, along with animation and video works reinterpreted by contemporary directors and graphic designers from their own perspectives, breathe new life into familiar film titles. The Title Exhibition expands film titles, which once existed as static text, making them move again and extending them into objects of 'experience' beyond simply being read. Names no longer stop at being called. Here, titles come alive and move once again.
