About this event

[Performance Introduction] Jeju's post-volcanic fieldwork starts with breathing in the shaking presence while moving between different time-scales. Lava turns into a forest (tree-ing), moisture moves along porous stone (in-filtrating), collapse becomes a hiding place (un-making), and violence remains in the ground (re-membering). Following the traces that persist even after the event, this lecture performance passes through the limits and failures faced by the body, moving across the boundaries between surface and underground, body and landscape, and visibility and extinction. In the process, it shares the ways in which vegetation and geological matter constantly affect each other through infiltration, resonance, and material persistence. After conducting on-site research in Jeju in June, Jang Su-mi (Seoul) and Miriam Jakob (Berlin) continued their work for four weeks during the Uferstudios residency in Berlin in July and August, translating their research across different environments into the format of a lecture performance. [Creator Profiles | Jang Su-mi, Miriam Jakob] Jang Su-mi | Jang Su-mi is a choreographer, performer, and artistic researcher based in Seoul and Berlin. She explores the relationship between the body and 'affect, embodiment, and the dynamics beyond the invisible and collective nature/culture dichotomy'. Spanning choreography, voice, and breath, she experiments with vulnerability, a sense of distance, and unlearning. Her long-term research on 'SCREAM' as a relational and political practice has led to works such as <scream es-say> (2017), <Dead-body Being> (2018), and <Queering Voice> (2021). Jang Su-mi studied choreography at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany and DAS Choreography at Amsterdam University of the Arts in the Netherlands. She has presented her works domestically and internationally, including at Theater Freiburg, Uferstudios Berlin, Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Seoul International Performing Arts Festival, DMZ Festival, and Frieze Seoul. Miriam Jakob | Miriam Jakob is a choreographer, dancer, and artistic researcher based in Berlin. She explores the porous boundaries between science and fiction, highlighting issues of sensory experience, accessibility, and interspecies communication. Combining choreography, video, installation, and performance, she traces how bodies (human and more-than-human) connect through resonance, uncertainty, and embodied forms of listening. Jakob's artistic research unfolds as interdisciplinary collaborations linking art, science, and 'embodied knowledge'. Her long-term research on breath and relationality has been informed by her training in breath therapy based on the 'Berlin Artistic Research Programme' and 'Ilse Middendorf Breath Method'. Jakob studied choreography at DAS Choreography at Amsterdam University of the Arts in the Netherlands, and holds a BA in 'Dance, Context, Choreography' and an MA in Anthropology. [Meeting the Festival] Following the land of Jeju is not something with predefined answers. The body stays for a long time, following the terrain and vegetation left by the volcano. They seek ways to translate the sensations the body encounters through walking, breathing, and staying for a long time into the language of performance.
